Ellagic Acid Benefits

Ellagic acid is a phytochemical that is readily found in several plant foods. The compound is easily broken down and absorbed in the body, and may have several health benefits. It is sold as a dietary supplement in the United States, but natural sources of ellagic acid can be easily integrated into the diet.

Significance

• Ellagic acid was first studied in the 1960s to determine if it had any blood clotting benefits. It has since been deemed a potential cancer-fighting nutrient because researchers have found that it may slow the growth of certain types of tumors. It is an antioxidant that reduces the effects of estrogen and may help the liver break down cancer-causing substances in the blood. Although more research is needed to support these claims, eating foods that contain ellagic acid may offer several other health benefits.

Types of Foods

• Ellagic acid is found in the following types of foods: raspberries, pomegranates, strawberries, raspberry seed extract, raspberry leaves, and grapes. The highest levels of ellagic acid are found in freeze-dried berries.

Benefits

• Some foods that contain ellagic acid have several health benefits. The Cancer Cure Foundation, an organization that has been providing information on alternative and integrative therapies since 1976, has listed red grapes as one of its cancer-fighting foods. Grapes contain reserveratrol which inhibits cancer-cell growth, and ellagic acid which can block enzymes that contribute to the growth of tumors.
Raspberries, pomegranates and strawberries are rich in antioxidants and can protect cells from free radical damage, and promote healthy cell regeneration.

ScienceDaily (Apr. 21, 2009) — Using a topical application of the antioxidant ellagic acid, researchers at Hallym University in the Republic of Korea markedly prevented collagen destruction and inflammatory response – major causes of wrinkles — in both human skin cells and the sensitive skin of hairless mice following continuing exposure to UV-B, the sun’s skin-damaging ultraviolet radioactive rays.

Ji-Young Bae, a graduate student in the laboratory of Dr. Young-Hee Kang, presented results of the two-part study on Tuesday, April 21, at the Experimental Biology 2009 meeting in New Orleans. The presentation was part of the scientific program of the American Society for Nutrition.

Ellagic acid is an antioxidant found in numerous fruits, vegetables and nuts, especially raspberries, strawberries, cranberries and pomegranates. Earlier studies have suggested it has a photoprotective effect.

Ellagic Acid Benefits

The foods we eat contain a multitude of chemicals that we’re often not aware of. Some of these substances tend to promote health while others are associated with an increased risk of disease. Ellagic acid is an example of a regularly consumed phytochemical (plant chemical) that may very well contribute to the betterment of our health.

The question many people have is, “How do we really know if something is healthy for us?”. In the case of ellagic acid the answer is found in the condition of the skin. But this is a unique substance, in that it helps whether you consume it in a food/supplement form or apply it directly to the skin.

Ellagic acid (EA) is a type of antioxidant referred to as a “polyphenol”. The most plentiful food sources of EA are blackberries, cranberries, pecans, pomegranates, purple/red grapes, raspberries, strawberries and walnuts. Some of the benefits of all of these fruits and nuts may be directly attributable to their EA content.

Ellagic Acid Benefits

Ellagic acid is a phenol found in many nutrient-rich plants. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center notes that ellagic acid has strong antioxidant properties. Research using rats and cell cultures has shown that ellagic acid may slow the growth of cancers caused by carcinogens. However, more research is required to determine whether ellagic acid provides protection against cancer in humans, according to the American Cancer Society.

Berries

Ellagic acid is the main phenol found in strawberries and in berries of the genus Rubus, which includes red raspberry, arctic bramble and cloudberry. The juice of these fruits contains little ellagic acid; rather, the pulp and seeds contain the phenol, so it is important to eat the whole berry. A study published in 1989 in the “”Journal of Food Composition and Analysis”" found that 95 percent of the ellagic acid in strawberries is in the pulp and that for raspberries 88 percent of the ellagic acid is in the seeds. Other berries that contain ellagic acid include cranberries, blackberries and blueberries.

Nuts

Most nuts contain ellagic acid, but walnuts and pecans contain the highest levels. Walnuts contain 590 mcg of ellagic acid, almost as much as strawberries, which contain 630 mcg. Pecans contain approximately half that amount, or 330 mcg, of ellagic acid, according to the 1989 paper in the “”Journal of Food Composition and Analysis.”" To ingest this phenol, walnuts and pecans can be eaten dry roasted, toasted, fresh or in pies and baking, since heat and processing do not diminish the ellagic acid content.

Other Foods

Other fruits that contain ellagic acid include pomegranates, grapes, apples, pears, kiwis, peaches and plums. Freeze-drying and processing do not destroy the ellagic acid, making dried or canned fruits an alternative source of the phenol. Strawberry and raspberry leaves contain ellagic acid, and dried leaves of these plants are often used as a dietary supplement. Eating natural food sources of ellagic acid is considered safe, according to the American Cancer Society. However, consult with your doctor before taking ellagic acid dietary supplements.

During these eight weeks, half of the exposed mice were given daily 10 microM topical applications of ellagic acid on their skin surface, even on the days in which they did not receive UV exposure. The other mice, also exposed to UV light, did not receive ellagic acid. (Another six mice served as controls, with neither UV exposure nor ellagic acid.)

What happened? First, as expected, the mice exposed to UV radiation without the ellagic acid treatment developed wrinkles and thickening of the skin.
Second, as hypothesized, the exposed mice that received topical application of ellagic acid showed reduced wrinkle formation.
Third, as suggested in the study of human cells, the ellagic acid reduced inflammatory response and MMP secretion due to protection from the degradation of collagen. The ellagic acid also helped prevent an increase of epidermal thickness
The researchers say the results demonstrate that ellagic acid works to prevent wrinkle formation and photo-aging caused by UV destruction of collagen and inflammatory response.

Ellagic Acid Benefits

Youthful looking skin may be one benefit of topical ellagic acid. But a more serious concern is that of skin cancer. A 1992 laboratory trial offers hope that ellagic acid’s benefits are more than just skin deep.
The study, published in the journal Basic Life Science found that ellagic acid (and other polyphenols found in similar foods) may inhibit skin tumors at various stages of their typical life cycle. This led the authors of the experiment to conclude that EA, “might be valuable in cancer therapy and/or prevention.”

There’s also some documentation about the dermatological benefits of orally administeredellagic acid. In 2006, a trial showed that an EA-rich pomegranate extract protected the skin of women exposed to slight sunburning conditions. The dosages used were 100mg, 200mg of ellagic acid a day or a placebo. During the course of the 4 week study, female volunteers using the EA all demonstrated evidence of UV protection. Similar results were also shown in an animal experiment from 2005.
Currently there are not a lot of ellagic acid creams and lotions on the market. In the future it’s likely that they’ll become more widely available. But it’s important to remember that virtually every aspect of health is impacted by diet. Incorporating foods and supplements that contain EA into a wellness routine may support the skin from the inside out.

Potential
• The American Cancer Society reports that ellagic acid and foods that contain ellagic acid may have several anti-cancer properties. Since the compound serves primarily as an antioxidant, the number of cancer cells and rate of cell growth may be decreased. Ellagic acid may also help to reduce heart disease, liver problems and birth defects.
People who increase consumption of foods that contain ellagic acid may be able to ward off certain types of illnesses and disease.

Considerations

• Eating foods that contain ellagic acid is considered to be safe, and should become a part of a balanced diet. However, there is no research to support the claims that eating foods high in ellagic acid alone is a treatment for cancer or certain types of diseases. Anyone who wants to increase their intake of foods containing ellagic acid to treat a health problem should consult with a physician.

Ellagic Acid Benefits

A brand new Korean study reported at the April 2009 Experimental Biology Meeting discusses the potential of a topical form of ellagic acid in the management of wrinkles. The study was set up in two separate parts:
1. The scientists first tested the effects of EA on human skin cells that were exposed to ultraviolet damage (a “sunburn” model).
2. A group of hairless mice, with skin characteristics similar to humans, were also exposed to excessive UV radiation over the course of 8 weeks. Half of the mice had EA applied to their skin daily.
The results of these experiments offer hope in the battle against premature skin aging. Here are the primary findings that were reported:
• The human skin cells treated with EA showed signs of reduced inflammation. In particular there was a reduction in MMP (matrix metalloproteinase), a substance that contributes to the breakdown of collagen and leads to the coarsening of skin.
• The mice who received high exposure to UV radiation developed thicker skin and wrinkles. The group of mice that had EA applied to their skin, while exposed to the same amount of UV radiation, exhibited fewer wrinkles.

Collectively, this evidence reveals that ellagic acid may combat wrinkles by protecting the collagen in skin tissue and reducing inflammation. In addition, it appears that EA also confers some protection against the harmful rays of the sun.

This adds to some promising research that was published in 2006 in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. In that investigation, it was determined that ellagic acid may encourage more elasticity and suppleness in an aged skin model. The researchers of that paper suggested that EA could be used as a preventive measure against the “normal” changes that occur in aging skin.

But how? The Kang laboratory found that, in human skin cells, ellagic acid worked to protect against UV damage by blocking production of MMP (matrix metalloproteinase enzymes that break down collagen in damaged skin cells) and by reducing the expression of ICAM (a molecule involved in inflammation).

The scientists then turned to young (four weeks), male, hairless mice – genetically bred types of mice often used in dermatology studies because of the physiological similarities of their skin to that of humans. For eight weeks, the 12 mice were exposed to increasing ultraviolet radiation, such as that found in sunlight, three times a week, beginning at a level sufficient to cause redness or sunburn and increasing to a level that would have definitely caused minor skin damage to human skin.
